MONITUR – Observation and monitoring of the Algarve tourist destination
Contributions to its sustainable development
The MONITUR Project
The MONITUR project aims to build an integrated and holistic evaluation model to measure and monitor the development of sustainable tourism in the Algarve, complemented by the development of a decision support system, as a central tool for continuous observation and monitoring of the dynamics of tourist activity in the region.
Public and private organizations at national and regional level, municipalities and other entities, including regional associations, private entities, the academic community and residents, can access the information made available online to evaluate and monitor the effects of the development of tourism in the region.
The dissemination of up-to-date data, as well as the publicizing of the results of scientific diagnostic, modelling and forecasting studies that they provide, constitute an important basis for the process of defining public policies for the tourism sector and development strategies on the part of the tourism industry, based on criteria of sustainability and social inclusion. At the same time, the relevance of this information system is reinforced by helping to deepen knowledge of the effects of tourism activity at various levels for residents and the community in general, while, at the same time, it is an important source of data for the Algarve Sustainable Tourism Observatory, Academia and research and, therefore, to the advancement of knowledge.
The MONITUR and the Algarve Sustainable Tourism Observatory (AlgSTO)
The MONITUR project is articulated with the objectives of the Algarve Sustainable Tourism Observatory (AlgSTO), by contributing with relevant information and statistical data for the diagnosis and trends of sustainable tourism activity in the Algarve.
The AlgSTO was created in 2019, as a result of a partnership between the Algarve Regional Tourism Board (RTA-Algarve), the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-Algarve), the University of Algarve (UAlg) and the Tourism of Portugal (TdP), and it is member of the International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO-INSTO) since 2020.
The mission committed to the AlgSTO is the improvement of processes designed to the adoption of sustainable practices, within the framework of Algarve tourism activities; namely, the decision-making processes leading to the creation of a healthier, greener, more resilient and regenerated tourist destination, offering a better quality of life, better means of mobility, more safety, and even improved environmental parameters (e.g., waste production, efficient use of resources, air and water quality). Annual activity reports of the AlgSTO can be assessed below.
